Vienna Music Film Festival

Need an excuse to go to Vienna, Austria? Well, I don’t either, but how about some fun stuff to do while you are there this summer?

The Vienna Music Film Festival is an outdoor event providing entertainment and outstanding food with influences that range from around the city to around the world. Held each summer at the Vienna City Hall Park, or the Rathaus, this year’s event began on June 27th and will be going strong until August 30th.

The festival takes place daily and this isn’t your standard summer social. As night falls you can grab a seat in the outdoor theater and enjoy opera, operetta, dance and concert performances on the giant screen. When it’s time to eat there are no Styrofoam packages and paper plates. All food is served on dinner plates with utensils and drinks served in glasses.

A combination of about 20 top restaurants provide you with one of the best culinary world tours around. You have your pick of cuisines from almost any region – Austrian, Indian, Italian, Turkish, Mexican, Japanese and Chinese to name a few. Beer and wine are plentiful including that found at the local Ottakringer brew stand where a Kirsch-beer should not be missed. All of this fine dining and local beer is served at affordable prices and the film itself is free.

What: Vienna Music Film Festival; Film Festival 2009 auf dem Wiener Rathausplatz

Where: City Hall Park, Rathausplatz

When: Daily June 27th to August 30th; Food is served 11:00 a.m. to midnight and films start at night fall

Need to Know: Take a good deal of patience with you as the crowds can be shoulder to shoulder as the evening wears on, especially on the weekends. Go early if you want a table to eat at or a seat to watch the film. Take some extra Euros with you for using the restroom located in the park and be prepared for a line.
