Pentagon announces $6 billion in new aid to Ukraine

On Friday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a new $6 billion aid package for Ukraine, the largest ever announced by Washington.

Austin said: “If Putin succeeds in Ukraine, the consequences will be global and significant, and Europe will face a security threat the likes of which we have never seen before.”

It was the second package announced this week, after Kiev was given $1 billion in aid on Wednesday. They are part of a $61 billion aid budget for Kiev approved by Congress this week and later signed by President Joe Biden.

A US official told Al Hurrah on Friday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will announce a new $6 billion military aid package for Ukraine.

The official added, “The new aid package will be through the Ukraine Defense Assistance Initiative and will meet the future military needs of the Ukrainian forces.”

The Ukrainian military is entering a critical juncture as it faces a shortage of new recruits and ammunition due to significant delays in receiving Western, particularly American, aid.

Washington confirmed on Wednesday that it had deployed ATA CMS missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers to Kiev.

Before the US, France and the United Kingdom supplied Kiev with “Sculpt” and “Storm Shadow” missiles, which have a range of about 250 kilometers.

The United States has provided the largest military aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, with billions of dollars allocated to Ukraine.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law a bill widely agreed in Congress that includes $61 billion in aid to Ukraine in the face of a Russian invasion.
