Worldly Style: Thai Silk Table Runners
Entrance to Chatucha Weekend Market Bangkok, Thailand (photo by Lori Rice)The outdoor markets of Thailand are overflowing with souvenirs that can fill your home with stylish Asian-inspired goods. Not to mention the fact that a small budget can go a long way at places like the Sunday Night Walking Street in Chiang Mai or the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. The only problem that usually arises is lack of luggage space to bring it all back.
Thai Silk Table Runners (photo by Lori Rice)During a recent trip around Southeast Asia my solution to this dilemma was Thai silk table runners. These beautiful, elegant runners come in every color imaginable hosting modern-meets-Asian designs. Festive red and green runners with gold accents can even be found in the mix, ideal for the holiday season. We filled all the available space in our small bags with these table runners which became gifts for family and friends. They were nicely packaged – flat and lightweight.
You can find these pieces just about everywhere around the country. We picked them up in the stores lining the streets of Ao Nang in Krabi, the Sunday night market in Chiang Mai and at the weekend market in Bangkok. Prepare to spend little, about 6 to 10 USD, and be prepared to dig a lot. You’ll likely find stacks of runners with many options that will meet your tastes in home décor.
