It attracts everyone from backpackers to the pampered high-society. While the coast is inviting, those seeking a bit of history and culture tend to find themselves in Ubud at some point during their visit. The center of all things creative, it’s no surprise that a piece of local art is a top souvenir purchase.

While not the beach, this town can still be considered highly touristy especially when you head into the central area to the market and temple. During our visit I learned that the key to finding beautiful, original art and fewer crowds was to explore the streets away from central area.

We stayed at the Green Field Bungalows and made our way up and down nearby streets such as Padang Tegal. One afternoon a beautiful painting of elephants hanging in a rustic gallery caught our eye. After some hard negotiation with a young girl who couldn’t have been over 13, we walked away with it for 65 USD, a price

If you happen to find yourself in the Mercado Central in the city of Belo Horizonte you will come across handcrafted pieces of cookware that are both decorative and functional. Pots range in sizes and you will easily find one to fit your needs whether you cook for two or ten. Styles vary too, some with copper handles, some without, others oval and shallow and still others

Not to mention the fact that a small budget can go a long way at places like the Sunday Night Walking Street in Chiang Mai or the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. The only problem that usually arises is lack of luggage space to bring it all back.

Thai Silk Table Runners (photo by Lori Rice)During a recent trip around Southeast Asia my solution to this dilemma was Thai silk table runners. These beautiful, elegant runners come in every color imaginable hosting modern-meets-Asian designs. Festive red and green runners with gold accents can even be found in the mix, ideal for the holiday season. We filled all the available space in our small bags with these table runners which became gifts for family and friends. They were nicely packaged – flat and lightweight.

You can find these pieces just about everywhere around the country. We picked them up in the stores lining the streets of Ao Nang in Krabi, the Sunday night market in Chiang Mai and at the weekend market in Bangkok. Prepare to spend little, about 6 to 10 USD, and be prepared to dig a lot. You’ll likely find stacks of runners with many options that will meet your tastes in home décor.
