Terrorism Suspected on Northwest Flight 253 - 342
Friday, December 25, 2009 at 7:29PM Two passengers on a Northwest Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam to Detroit on Friday suffered minor injuries due to an incident involving an on-board explosive. The suspect, who is identified by Federal officials as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, of Nigeria, is being treated for burns at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. Few details have been released but it is known that the suspect attempted to ignite a bag of powder strapped to his body. The FBI is currently investigating whether the suspect has ties to Al-Qaeda or other terrorist groups. White House officials have said the administration believes this to be an act of terrorism.
The Airbus 330 bearing the Delta insigna landed without further incident in Detroit around noon E.T. and all 278 passengers and their luggage were re-screened by the TSA before being allowed to go on their way.
