Rocktoberfest in Kentucky! - 215

Calling all adventure travelers who have a passion for climbing! Yes, this may require setting down steins of German beer, but there is another fest to celebrate in October – Rocktoberfest!

The Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition (RRGCC) will be hosting their 9th annual Roctoberfest in Slade, Kentucky October 9th, 10th and 11th, 2009. It’s a weekend full of extreme sports and rock climbing adventure. Those who attend will be able to enjoy the Reel Rock Film Tour, climbing competitions, clinics taught by professionals in the sport, vendor booths from the Outdoor Industry, and the staples of any good time, music and food.

Climbers can take part in the competition for a fee of $15. Judging is based on endurance, number of bolts clipped and difficulty of the route. Sign up takes place on Saturday, October 10th, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The competition will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with winners announced later in the evening.

If you don’t want to compete there are plenty of other options for the weekend. The film fest takes place on Friday night, there’s a party Saturday night and clinics on Sunday. Admission fees range from $10 to $30 and all attendees can register online.

Red River Gorge in Kentucky is one of the top climbing destinations in the world. Funds from Rocktoberfest go towards the RRGCC’s 2004 purchase of Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve. This 750 acre area was purchased by the organization as a way to preserve climbing access indefinitely.
