Margaret Atwood at the Wickaninnish - 229
Monday, November 16, 2009 at 11:34AM There’s just something about a rugged, wind-swept coast, a cozy room with a fireplace and a good book that makes me feel all snuggly and relaxed. Literature lovers can get all three, along with face time with a famous author, later this month at the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino.
Best-selling Canadian author Margaret Atwood, who has just published her latest novel, “The Year of the Flood” will be hobnobbing with guests at the Wickaninnish Inn during the weekend that begins Friday, Nov. 27. Atwood and her husband, writer Graeme Gibson, will be reading from their works during the weekend and will attend a welcome wine reception and Sunday morning brunch.

I visited the Wick in June and was really taken with the place. All the rooms have fireplaces and fabulous ocean views. When I was there, my room even had a view from the tub. How luxurious is that! The Inn’s restaurant offers stunning views with windows lining all the outside walls. And the food measures up to the view, no easy task in this stunning setting on Canada’s west coast.
I’ve heard Atwood speak before and she has a remarkably funny delivery, something that I had not expected. She could have been a stand-up comic. Imaging her making guests chuckle while sipping a glass of good wine in front of a fire, and with a view of the Pacific Ocean, is certainly a book lover’s dream. There might even be a novel somewhere in there: “it was a dark and stormy night at the Wickaninnish Inn….” After all, the Wick is also known for it’s storm watching weekends, which celebrate the power of Mother Nature at this spot with it’s front-row view of the storms over the Pacific.
The Inn’s Writers Inn Residence package, starting at $747.20, includes two nights’ accomodations, a welcome wine and cheese reception, Sunday bruch with Atwood and Gibson and two tickets to a public reading in the nearby town of Tofino. For more information visit the Wickaninnish Inn.
