Review of Incognito Street: How Travel Made Me a Writer
by Barbara Sjoholm
The true message of this book hit me at page 45. In a letter, Sjoholm writes:
...but I now understand a few things about writing I didn’t before. One, you can’t force it. Two, living is more important for a writer, at least at the beginning.
This book takes the reader on the journey of a talented travel writer, a journey that is not without struggle and self-doubt. Each of us has a past that brings us to where we are today and this book vividly describes how the author’s past takes her on an expedition around Europe creating the successful writer that she would one day become.
The adventures of self discovery, openness to a world unlike her own and the new life that awaits her upon entering each new place fills the reader with anticipation. The flow of the text patterns the thoughts of the human mind as it bounces back and forth between the past, present and future. Memories intertwine with things to come and somehow it all makes sense.
The book represents what writing, reading and travel are all about; opening ourselves up to the views and ways of others, challenging what we perceive and how we live. Once you turn the first few pages, it is difficult to put down for the chance you may miss part of the adventure. Whether you spent your early twenties exploring old Europe or just dreamed you could, if you are a traveler, a writer or both, this is a book you can relate to.
